Matt Taibbi Describe la America Post Bush
(Matt Taibbi Describes Post-Bush America)
This article was orignally written in English and translated to Spanish for the Peruvian cultural magazine Dedomedio. The article was subsequently published in English in the alternative newspaper Eat the State! (Seattle, Washington) under the title "Mencken's Spawn: An Interview with Matt Taibbi". Below is the unedited article as submitted to Dedomedio.
Rolling Stone chief political reporter Matt Taibbi captures a generation's anger towards American politics with all the swagger and punch of a barroom brawler. He has become the pundit of choice for the embittered class, disenchanted by modern campaigns that suffer from a malignant pettiness. His writing frequently draws comparisons to other bad-boys of journalism, including Hunter S. Thompson and P.J. O'Rourke (who were his predecessors at Rolling Stone), but he says he’s really “copying” the granddaddy of them all: early-20th century journalist/satirist H.L. Mencken. In addition to his gig at Rolling Stone, he appears as a regular commentator on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and has authored three books on American politics.

Five Students; Five Causes. What Young Latinos Are Doing To Help Change The World
Spending break under sunny skies is tempting for any student soon to face final exams. But why settle for the same old resorts when you can trek through new territories that can literally change your life and the world? We found a few awesome students who decided to use their down time for just that reason.
Tufts University grad and bachelor’s in biology recipient Jose Alfaro used his school’s connections with the Timmy Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing basic healthcare resources to disadvantaged children around the world. The Nicaraguan L.A. native asked to work in the Dominican Republic, spending his 2006 spring break setting up medical clinics in rural areas. Implementing medical needs over a short time challenged him to strategize for effective change.

Coney's Last Stand
By Nathaniel S. Berke
If there’s any one word to describe the development of Coney Island, it’s confusion.
Private developers, city agencies, development advocates, union groups, artists, councilmen, community board members, amusement operators, public housing advocates, mayors – real and phony – and a white-suited anti-consumerism reverend all vying for the spotlight… what are we even talking about anymore?
Everyone seems to have his or her own plan. The main private developer, Thor Equities, has one. The city agency Coney Island Development Corporation (CIDC) has one, and had another one before that. A myriad of groups are pushing their own proposals that cover their interests – affordable housing, proper infrastructure, job and career training, revitalization strategies to “save” outdoor amusements.

Livestation Expands Technical Trial, Hires Chris Cramer
By Nathaniel S. Berke
An example of a news item written for World Screen Newsflash, a newsletter sent daily to more than 45,000 television executives via email.
LONDON, February 19: As Livestation, a peer-to-peer live-streaming news aggregator built by the Internet tech outfit Skinkers, enters a new round of technical trials, the company’s founder, Matteo Berlucchi, tells World Screen Newsflash that technology such as his will change the way international broadcast rights work.
To help support Livestation, Skinkers’ first endeavor in media broadcasting, the company has hired the former president of CNN, Chris Cramer, as a strategic advisor. Cramer bulks up Livestation’s roster of media industry veterans, which also includes Philip Rowley, the former chairman and CEO of AOL Europe; Dr. William Cooper, the former head of interactive at BBC Broadcast; and David McAdam, the former head of operations at ITV.com. The set is expected to complement Skinkers’ technical expertise with insight into the media industry.

Channel Profile: PBS KIDS Sprout
By Nathaniel S. Berke
An example of a channel profile written for World Screen Weekly, an email newsletter sent every Thursday to more than 40,000 television executives via email.
PBS KIDS Sprout broke the mold for traditional channel launch strategies when it debuted its video-on-demand service five months before its linear channel and website. According to Sandy Wax, the president and general manager of Sprout, this allowed the channel to pursue a “platform-agnostic” philosophy that maximizes the strengths of each medium without “cannibalizing” the others. “There was a unique advantage to being able to truly think about a multiplatform destination for kids and families where each way that you interact with it is equally important and would take advantage of that particular type of experience,” she says.
